Typically Parisian, the cobbled streets of the rue Montorgueil district lead into the heart of the city: market gardeners, cheese makers, bakers, restaurants or bars … It feels like everyone in these pedestrian streets is dedicated to satisfying your taste buds and facilitating socializing for you. A lively atmosphere that was already present in this district in the 19th century, when the fish and lobster sellers passed on their way to Les Halles and where the great writers such as Balzac, Alexandre Dumas or Stendhal came to feast.
They would meet at the Rocher de Cancale (at No. 78), a restaurant that has retained its original façade like many others here. And in this unusual street, the shops have also preserved their woodwork of yesteryear and their murals. When you have eaten your fill, make a small detour by the Le Grand Cerf passage located a stone’s throw away: it is a must that never ceases to impress with its incredibly high glass rooves. At a time when much of Paris was without electricity or sidewalks, the passages were very popular places: fully paved, protected from rain and mud, people came to eat, drink, shop and have fun at the theater or the dance hall.
